ScotlandAll-rounder
Mark Watt is a left-arm spinner from Scotland whose method relies on control more than on big turn or flight. He tends to push the ball through on a flat path, darting it into the batter and denying both space to free the arms and a full ball to drive. That pressure often leads to miscued shots, so his value lies chiefly in keeping the scoring in check rather than running through a line-up.
He was an important contributor on one of the most celebrated days in Scottish cricket: a one-day international victory in 2018 against England, then the top-ranked side, in a match where both teams scored heavily. The result is regarded as the greatest moment the country has produced in the sport so far.
Watt can also chip in with useful runs down the order, but selectors pick him for what he does with the ball. In English domestic cricket he has spent time on the books of both Derbyshire and Lancashire.
His first-class experience amounts to only a few matches, and for now his skills look most at home in limited-overs formats. Twenty-over cricket suits him best of all, because batters there must go after the bowling from the first ball, and that urgency plays straight into the hands of a tight, skiddy spinner like him.
