ScotlandWicketkeeper batter
Matthew Cross is a wicket-keeper batsman who plays for Scotland. As of January 2015 he was studying engineering at Loughborough University. Alongside his studies he turned out for Loughborough MCCU and also appeared for the Nottinghamshire second XI. His work for the university side and for Scotland's age-group team drew favourable notice.
His profile first grew at youth level. At the 2012 Under-19 World Cup he was vice-captain of the Scotland Under-19 side. In 2013 he moved into senior one-day cricket, making his first appearance for Scotland's team in the YB40 competition in a fixture against Hampshire.
That same year brought his international breakthrough. He played his maiden T20I for Scotland against Kenya and was then picked in the T20 squad that travelled to the UAE for the 2013 World Cup Qualifiers. His ODI debut followed in 2014, when he was part of the Scotland group at the World Cup Qualifiers. Batting at the top of the order in that event, he made two half-centuries and repeatedly gave his side a solid platform.
The months that followed were tougher. His batting fell away over the summer, and during the acclimatisation tour ahead of the World Cup he was shifted further down the order. Still young, he was nonetheless seen as a cricketer with plenty of promise.
