SA vs AUS, 2nd Test · Scorecard

Final overs

- Plenty to ponder for Australia with their batting issues being brutally exposed in the last couple of days. Some of the shot-selection left a lot to be desired and a couple of their players seem to be in a rut. Marnus Labuschagne has now gone over three years since his last hundred, and 14 innings since his last fifty, while Nic Maddinson looks out of sorts at the top of the order. How long before they pull the trigger on a change or two? Then there's the dilemma about Nathan Lyon, and who makes way if he returns. Surely you can't leave Scott Boland out after this performance, surely... South Africa, on the other hand, will be pumped. The return of KG Rabada has been a huge boost and while Nortje may not be available in Cape Town, there are suitable replacements to call on. What a decider it promises to be. Can't wait. So that's all for now. This is Sagar Chawla signing off on behalf of Mukesh and Hardik Worah. Goodbye!
- Bavuma 4/4: [How will South Africa manage Anrich Nortje’s absence in Cape Town?] I mean, that's a big loss for us. We know what an extra dimension he adds to our bowling attack. I think that one we do have to take it upon ourselves. We probably took the risk by allowing him to play two games in a row. So, I think that's just for us to take on. In terms of who might come, obviously, we'll go to Cape Town. We'll see what's happening there in Cape Town. You've got guys like Gerald (Coetzee) on the wings, Dane Paterson as well as (Corbin) Bosch. So, I mean, the options are there. There's Sean (Senuran Muthusamy) as well. But, yeah, the options are there. Whoever we decide after we're there in Cape Town, we'll be confident that they form part of our best XI for those conditions.
- Bavuma 3/4: [How did you keep the team focused despite the rain delays?] I think it's just basically to try to stay in the moment, right? Like, I think when we were batting, for me, it was all about how we can extend it, how we can go another hour. Another hour becomes a session. How we can make sure we keep them on their feet, because we know how that does have an effect. And then, once the opportunity is there, we'll be calling on us to be a lot more ruthless. And I think in the second innings, that's exactly what we did. So I think that's how we play our cricket. I think our team, the way we go about it, we play good old Test cricket, try and wear the opposition down and then take them down when the opportunity presents itself.
- Bavuma 2/4: [How do individual performances make your job easier as captain?] Makes the job a lot easier. I mean, a guy like KG, just his value that he brings in, his ability to assume the responsibility and pressure from the bowling attack and kind of allow the other guys to do what they naturally can do. You saw a guy like Marco Jansen in the first innings coming through with his class, and even in the second innings as well. So he's of massive value. I think for him (Rabada), he'll have the cobwebs. He would have dusted those off. It's been a while since he was out on the field, but due to the guy's class, you know, he's still able to go and get four wickets in the second innings. So, yeah, hopefully that continues to get better and better.
- Temba Bavuma | SA captain and Player of the Match 1/4: [How’s the heart rate after that dramatic finish?] Heart rate's quite good. Yeah, no, everything's good. [How did the weather drama affect your plans today?] The weather also wanted to play a part in the day. We were a little bit scrambling there in the change room, not too sure about the weather. But, yeah, excited as soon as we got on. They made us work for those wickets, those six wickets. And, obviously everyone's happy in the change room. [What does your career-best 179 mean to you?] I mean, like I said, definitely there at the top as one of my best. I think we saw throughout the days that batting was quite difficult, especially against the new ball. So I think to be able to perform like that, to be able to get the team in a very competitive position, I take a lot of pride in that. But also to make it a play, having the chance to win the series. So, yeah, lots I can speak to it. A lot of confidence I'll take from it. I think a part of me, a big part of me, is still in the moment. We still have a job at hand, with another match still to go. So, you know, once that is done, I'll kind of allow myself to soak in all of that.
- Cummins 2/2: [What must Australia improve with the bat in Cape Town?] Ah, I think you saw almost a blueprint today in the way Scotty and Trav went about their innings. Very different, but they both have got their class, their tight method, and they stuck with it. And against some class bowlers in the opposition, you might need to weather the odd storm, but when you do get through it, there are some runs out there. [Are there still gaps to address in Australia’s top order?] Yeah, after a loss, there's always a few things you look at. Ideally, we'd be scoring more runs, and, you know, I thought the pitch was pretty good out there. We could have maybe scored a few runs. So we'll look at all that. We've got a few days. The good thing is it's 1-1 in the series. [Can Australia learn anything from South Africa’s approach?] It's almost the reverse of last week, isn't it? One side gets ahead and kind of suffocates the other side with a few early wickets or whatever it is. So they played well. They're top two teams in the world. Probably a series at one-all is similar to where we would have thought it was going to sit.
- Pat Cummins | Australia captain 1/2: [How do you sum up today’s defeat?] I feel there was some good fight today. Scotty Boland and Trav both, I thought played their roles really well. But, yeah, it was a fair way to come back from it. Wasn't quite enough. [What was missing compared to the Durban performance?] I think it was a lot. Yeah, obviously a long way away from our best. I think last week we didn't start off too strong, but everyone contributed, and lots of little things added up to a win. But, yeah, today, just across the board, not enough of us contributed. [How difficult is it to get the team balance right?] I think the balance is always fine. We're lucky we've got loads of all-rounders to call on, so I don't think that's a major issue. But, yeah, again, kind of from all departments, just needed a little bit more.

Meanwhile, Australia have lost 30 and drawn 11 of the 41 Tests in which they were forced to follow on. Marco Jansen is just the second South African since readmission to score a fifty and take a five-for in the same Test against Australia after Dale Steyn at the MCG in 2008. Gqeberha is only the second Test venue outside England where Australia have suffered five defeats, joining Karachi (5 losses). They have not won there since 1997. KG Rabada at Gqeberha vs AUS Tests: 2 Wkts: 17 Avg: 15.3 SR: 27.5 5-fers: 2 – Rabada has claimed 64 wickets against Australia at 21.1, including four five-wicket hauls. Only Dale Steyn (70) has more wickets against Australia among South African bowlers. Temba Bavuma as captain in Tests Matches - 14 Won - 12 Lost - 1 Draws - 1 Win% - 85.71 - This is the first time Australia have lost an international match after Travis Head scored a century, in 21 such instances. The only other exception was a drawn Test against India in Brisbane in 2024, where he scored 152.
- 16:01 Local Time, 14:01 GMT, 19:31 IST: Who saw this coming after most of the first two days were lost to rain? And after South Africa were reduced to 110/6 in the first innings. At that point it seemed that only one team was likely to win the Test and it wasn't the Proteas. But captain Temba Bavuma's sensational 179 - probably his greatest ever Test knock - combined with the efforts of Jansen and Harmer turned the tide on a pitch where batters never felt that they were in. The skiddy low bounce and the movement off the seam meant the bowlers were always in the game, and so it proved as the Aussies were blown away for just 99 in the first innings. It opened the match up nicely for the hosts who, despite being a bowler down, enforced the follow-on and kept running in despite the miles in their legs. They were tested today by an unlikely foe as Scott Boland showed a lot of resolve, grinding his way to 40 off 166 balls. Travis Head raised only his second away Test hundred as well. But it was too big a mountain to climb, made even harder by some of the wickets which were gifted away.

- 107.1WMarco Jansen to Josh Hazlewood, out Caught by Aiden Markram!! It's a comeback for the ages from South Africa as they level the series in Gqeberha. Captain Temba Bavuma's incredible rescue act, Marco Jansen's all-round efforts, the fire of Rabada and the persistence of Mulder have conjured up a win that will occupy its place among their most memorable ones. And once again, after the familiar highs of Durban, Australia get another taste of the dirt in Gqeberha like they did in 2014 and 2018. Jansen it is who has the honour of putting the finishing touches. Short of length outside off, climbs on Hazlewood as he looks to cut and flies off the edge into the safe hands of Markram at second slip. The celebrations begin in the crowd and on the field.
