Mulder is a South African all-rounder who bats with an orthodox method and bowls medium pace. Strongly built and broad across the shoulders, he backs his attacking batting with a range of bowling variations, a skill set much valued in the modern game. He first took up the sport in college and, while still a teenager, was spotted and drawn into the youth system.

His progress through the junior ranks was swift, and he earned a place in the South Africa squad for the 2016 U-19 World Cup. He was later linked with the Stellenbosch Monarchs, though Cricket South Africa postponed the Global T20 league in which that side was due to compete.
Steady returns in domestic cricket brought him a first One-Day International call-up in late 2017. He came into the side against Bangladesh as cover for Wayne Parnell, who was injured. That appearance yielded a single-figure score with the bat and one wicket, and it remained his only ODI outing for some time afterwards.
As of March 2018, consistent domestic form had earned him a place in the Test squad for the home series against Australia, named only days after he turned 20. South Africa have been searching for a pace-bowling all-rounder, and with plenty of competition for that role from other players in the domestic game, Mulder is among those in contention.
