South AfricaBowler
Harmer is an all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm off-spin, and he has played his first-class cricket for the Warriors. He made an immediate impression for them. In his first appearance he returned 5/98 and made 46 in the opening innings, then followed up with 1/53 and an unbeaten 69 in the second.
That start quickly turned into a regular place in the side. In the 2011-12 season, his first as a full-time member of the team, the off-spinner claimed 44 wickets, more than any other bowler managed that season. His continued success brought a call-up to the South Africa Test team.
His Test debut came against the West Indies in the 2015 New Year's Test. Devon Smith was his first victim, and he finished the game with match figures of 7/153. That performance secured him a spot for the tour of Bangladesh in July 2015. He was also picked for South Africa's tour of India, though that series turned out to be his final one in Test cricket for the Proteas. His last match came at Nagpur, where he took five wickets in the game, four of them in the first innings. For the fourth Test in Delhi he made way for Dane Piedt.
When the selectors then left him out of the South Africa 'A' tour, Harmer chose to join Essex under a Kolpak deal. He adapted to the English county game with ease and became a key figure as Essex claimed their first County Championship title in 25 years. He collected 72 wickets that season at an average of 19.19, a haul bettered only by teammate Jamie Porter, who finished with 75.
