Nic Maddinson

His domestic form earned him national selection for a T20I against India at Rajkot in 2013. Opening the batting, he looked untroubled on debut and made 34 while scoring at a strike rate above 200. Later he was handed a Test opportunity, debuting in the Adelaide Test of a home series against South Africa. That chapter proved disappointing: across three Tests his best score was 22, and he was left out of the Test side.

In 2017, after a run of poor form, New South Wales did not renew his contract, and he relocated to Victoria at a low point in his career. The move paid off quickly. On his Shield debut for his new state in 2018, against Queensland, he struck 162, but during that match a bouncer hit his arm and broke the forearm bone in two. He spent time away from the game recovering and came back in February 2019 with metal still inside his arm, grinding out a hundred in his first innings on return. In the 2019/20 season he scored 780 runs and shared the Shield player of the year award.

In franchise cricket, Maddinson was a key figure for the Sydney Sixers over a long stretch before joining the Melbourne Stars in 2018/19 and then the Melbourne Renegades in 2021/22. Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him at the 2014 IPL auction, and he featured in the early matches of that seventh edition, but modest returns saw him replaced by Chris Gayle once Gayle was over an injury, and no team bought him in later editions. He also appeared in the 2016 CPL for the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
