He bats left-handed and can also bowl part-time slow left-arm. His attacking approach is well suited to limited-overs cricket. At the 2016 Pakistan Cup he made 297 runs across five matches, with one hundred and two half-centuries, finishing second on the run charts behind Ahmed Shehzad. His 115 in the final helped Khyber Pakhtunkhwa claim the trophy.

Strong domestic returns across formats secured his place with Lahore Qalandars for the second season of the PSL. His aggressive batting then earned him selection in Pakistan's squad for the Champions Trophy in mid 2017. He missed Pakistan's opening group match against India. He made his international debut in the next game, against South Africa, scoring 31 from 23 deliveries. Half-centuries against Sri Lanka and England followed. He capped the tournament with a hundred against India in the final and was named player of the final as Pakistan won the title. He finished the event with 252 runs from 4 matches, making him a celebrated figure in Pakistani cricket.

Uneven form has seen him move in and out of the national side. At the 2023 ODI World Cup he was kept in the squad but was not the first-choice opener, with Abdullah Shafique and Imam opening the batting. Given an opportunity late in the tournament, he won consecutive Man of the Match awards against Bangladesh and New Zealand. He was overlooked for ODIs after that but returned to the squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
