New ZealandAll-rounder
Mitchell Santner is a New Zealand all-rounder who bowls left-arm spin and bats in the lower order. Most of his international work has come in white-ball cricket, and he has played an important part for his country at ICC tournaments. In time he was given the captaincy of New Zealand's limited-overs teams.
Before the 2025 Indian Premier League season he changed franchises, leaving Chennai Super Kings to join Mumbai Indians. He was used more heavily there than in his earlier IPL campaigns. Across 13 appearances he took 10 wickets and conceded roughly 7.92 runs per over.
Mumbai mostly brought him on in the middle overs. His task was to slow the scoring and build pressure on opponents rather than collect large wicket totals. His selection was often a tactical choice. He tended to feature on pitches that offered spinners some grip, or against batting line-ups that were seen as vulnerable to left-arm spin. Bowling a consistently tight line is central to that role.
With the bat he can add useful runs from low in the order. His experience leading New Zealand also gives the Mumbai Indians dressing room another source of leadership.
