New ZealandBowler
Matt Henry is a fast bowler from Canterbury who can push the speed gun to high readings, and his arrival drew comparisons with Shane Bond's entry into international cricket. The likeness extends to fitness troubles: Henry has battled injuries, and his career only began to gather momentum after he underwent back surgery in 2012.
His first ODI was a standout, with figures of 4-38 that sealed a series victory for New Zealand against India. Within a few months, Chennai had bought him at the 2014 Indian T20 League auction. He missed out on New Zealand's original 15-man group for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, but was brought in to replace Adam Milne for the semi-final against South Africa, and he was also involved in the final against Australia. From then on he has been a regular presence in the national squad across all formats.
White-ball cricket is where Henry has made his biggest mark, and he has developed into a dangerous option for New Zealand, even as injuries have interrupted his progress. He was at his best when New Zealand won the Chappell-Hadlee series on home soil in 2016, though Australian batters handled him roughly in the return series in Australia later that year. He has nonetheless delivered a number of influential spells in limited-overs matches.
What separates Henry from many New Zealand quicks, who rely more on swing, is his knack for extracting movement off the seam at a brisk pace. Injuries have forced him to take a little off his speed, yet he still hits the bat hard and can move the ball in either direction.
