New ZealandAll-rounder
Glenn Phillips is a right-handed wicketkeeper and attacking batter from New Zealand, regarded by many as a leading figure among the country's emerging batting talent. He made an early impression for Auckland in the domestic Twenty20 competition, hitting 55 from 32 balls against Otago on debut. He went on to top Auckland's run tally for that tournament with 369, and that form brought selection in the national under-19 squad for the 2016 World Cup.
His progress after that was rapid. Phillips made his first-class debut in the 2016-17 season, and his quick scoring earned him a Twenty20 international debut against South Africa in 2017. He has since become a regular on the global T20 league circuit. His first Caribbean Premier League campaign, in 2017, brought 457 runs at an average of 41.54 and a strike rate of 146.94.
On the biggest stages he has delivered memorable innings. At the 2022 T20 World Cup he made 104 from 64 balls against Sri Lanka at the SCG. In May 2023, playing for SRH against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, he struck 25 off seven deliveries, including three sixes and a four, to swing the match his side's way. Later that year he featured in every New Zealand match at the ODI World Cup, contributing 285 runs as his team reached the semi-finals, where India knocked them out.
Phillips has also established himself in the Test side, appearing in almost every Test since his recall for the tour of Bangladesh in late 2023. He often bats at number seven, adds useful off-spin on subcontinent pitches, and frequently builds important partnerships with the lower order. Close to the bat he has been posted at gully or backward point, where he has held many spectacular catches. During New Zealand's whitewash of India away from home in 2024, he collected 8 wickets and 114 runs.
An outstanding outfielder as well, Phillips remains a match-winning threat whose powerful hitting can change a game within a few overs.
