Final overs

- Shreyas Iyer’s tenure as India’s T20I captain began with humbling defeats in Ireland and England, but the tide has turned emphatically. Iyer and his team are now beginning to find their rhythm, with India winning each of their last 10 T20Is. And tonight, the skipper underlined his growing authority in spectacular fashion, smashing a magnificent century. West Indies will have to be far better than they were tonight if they are to beat this Indian team and fight their way back into the series. The second T20I takes place in Ranchi on Friday (October 9), and we will be here nice and early for all the action. But that’s it from us tonight. We will see you soon. Good night and take care, everyone!
- Iyer 2/2: [Do you want to overwhelm opponents like this?] Winning definitely tastes different, and that's what we keep talking about in the dressing room. If it's your day, make sure that you win the match for the team. And today it was me. Previous couple of games, it was the batsmen who finished off the game. So yeah, overall I feel it was a comprehensive performance, and I think if we continue with the same mindset, we will be one of the destructive teams in T20s. [How impressed were you with Naman Dhir's bowling?] Yeah, special player, I must say. Like showing that attitude and approach, wanting to bowl in those crucial moments, he realized that the ball was turning, and then he capitalized on it. So commendable performance by him, and I love his attitude. [Will you get a long sleep tonight?] Looking forward to (it). I'm already sleepy. I could see Axar's eyes as well have become red. So I'm sure all of us are.
- Shreyas Iyer | India captain & Player of the Match 1/2: [Do you feel at home in Lucknow?] Not really. After that exhausting travel, I didn't realize where I was, to be honest. I think every day I just need to wake up like this. But yeah, I adapted quickly to the wicket, to the conditions, and I think bowling first helped us a lot. [How did you overcome the travel fatigue?] We just didn't look at it as an excuse. We wanted to come and play as any other cricketer would, and yeah, we saw the excitement of India versus West Indies in the ODIs, how amazing it was. But coming into T20s, we know that they are a destructive side. So for us, it's important that we stuck to the process, and that's what we did today. So great efforts by every individual. [How special was your first T20I hundred?] Well, definitely exultant. That's the word I would use today, (for the) the performance. And yeah, obviously speaking, I was actually thinking about getting my first century, and it came through. So, you know, I definitely want to say that dreams do come true.
- Hope 2/2: [Why hold your spinners back early on?] Ideally, I would like them to be able to bowl eight overs each. We only had two of them in our side at the point in time. So we wanted to, if you got a couple more wickets, you still had a few left-handers in your back end, we could get Chase to come in and do some damage in the middle. But it just didn't work out for us today. You know, we wanted an extra spinner, but so many things you could look at in hindsight. But yeah, India played well and they played better than us today. [Are you enjoying your own form in India?] I just love batting here. So whenever I get an opportunity to come and play some cricket here, it always makes me happy.
- Shai Hope | West Indies captain 1/2: [What went wrong in the second half of the powerplay?] To be honest, you always put your finger on many parts in the game, but it just feels though we didn't get enough runs in the backend. I thought we maybe been a little bit too chaotic in the batting. We very aggressive about playing. But yeah, when you're playing in India, you gotta put runs on the board. You almost have to have like an extra 20 or 30 runs cushion because when you're trying to defend with the ball, the wetness on the outfield, the surface tends to get a little bit better. So you gotta give yourself a little bit more cushion. [On the team composition] Well, sometimes you'd want a few more all-rounders to be bowling, some different options for you. But just the combination we had to go with today. You know, we expected guys to execute regardless of what skill set they bring to the table. But we just didn't have enough to get over the line today against India. And like I said, when you're setting a target, it's always more difficult down here.
- Ishan Kishan (2/2): (Talk us through that catch of yours, please) Yeah, I was not able to judge the ball because it was coming straight from the lights, but I had that slight intuition where I felt the ball's gonna appear near my waist, so I just went for it and I'm just thankful that it was in my hand afterwards. (Twenty-four hours since you guys got back together, how's the body feeling? What was the messaging around the dressing room before the start of this game?) Nothing, we just, you know, these things happen. You won't get time, sometimes you'll be put under pressure, but at the same time, looking at West Indies, how they have been playing cricket recently, our job was to, once we step on the field, once you wear the jersey, you have to give your all. Some days you won't be feeling so good, but it's our job to just give 100 percent if you're there.
- Ishan Kishan (1/2): (That single to give the strike to Shreyas Iyer, easy decision for you?) Yeah, I think he was in very good touch and to be very honest, looking from the other end, I felt it's better to keep him on strike and not let the momentum stop. So my job was pretty easy in the middle, to just get off strike and let him play as many balls as he can. (In a partnership, when do you realise that you need to be the backseat driver?) I think you get to know in the middle. How the other batter is timing the ball, if I'm doing it better or he is doing it. And he looked in very good touch today. And I was not looking in such great touch, to be very honest. So I just felt it's better to keep him on strike rather than just be on strike, try those shots, but at the same time, I wanted him to keep the momentum going.

- 22:10 Local Time, 16:40 GMT, 22:10 IST: That is some statement batting from India and their skipper Shreyas Iyer on a surface that was far from straightforward - a world away from the three batting highways served up during the ODI series. Yet India, led superbly with the bat by Iyer, who smashed a stunning hundred, have made light work of the 172-run target set by the West Indies. At the end of the first innings, Sherfane Rutherford felt they were around 20 runs short. Judging by the way this chase unfolded, though, they may have been closer to 60 runs short of a competitive total. Akeal Hosein and Roston Chase extracted some grip and turn with the new ball, dismissing India’s openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma inside four overs to make the chase interesting. But that was about as good as it got for West Indies. Iyer walked in and dominated from the word go, tearing into the attack with 10 fours and six sixes in a breathtaking 102* off just 43 balls. He put on an unbeaten 137-run stand off 67 balls with Ishan Kishan to completely take the game away. Uncharacteristically, Kishan was the more sedate of the two, but he played his role to perfection, smartly hanging around till the end with a composed 37 off 27, happy to play second fiddle while Iyer orchestrated the carnage at the other end. One catching decision didn’t go West Indies’ way, while they were also a little sloppy in the field. But even that probably wouldn’t have stopped India from taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. FYI, India have now won their last 10 T20Is in a row.

- 14.41Roston Chase to Shreyas Iyer, 1 run, oh Chase fires a needless throw and the game is over! Yorker on the stumps, dug out to the right of the bowler. Definite dot but Chase lets his frustration out and fires a throw when there is no back up. Ishan wasn't overly backing up and the off-target throw eventually ends the game
- 14.36Roston Chase to Shreyas Iyer, SIX, maiden T20I hundred for India's T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer! Fastest by an Indian player against West Indies! This is ruthless. This is class. This is Shreyas Iyer at his very best. Tossed up by Chase, and Iyer simply hammers it over long-on for a towering six to reach the landmark. The last time he played a T20 at this venue, turning out for Punjab Kings, he smashed a hundred then too, and he has done it again tonight off just 42 deliveries, this time in India colours. He raises his bat and soaks in the applause from everyone inside the venue

- 13.66Matthew Forde to Shreyas Iyer, SIX, third six of the over. Shreyas Iyer just a hit away now. It's a short of length delivery just outside off, he gets forward and muscles the pull, long-on was in business but as he ran to his right, he watches it sail over. This is some exhibition of batting. 24 off the over and India are almost there. And Shreyas is definitely going for that 100. Don't doubt that ever
- 13.54Matthew Forde to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, change of angle and that's a filthy delivery. A low full-toss and well down leg, with short fine inside. Shreyas Iyer doesn't need a second invitation at all, he swings it away to the fine-leg fence. Well wide of short fine. Matthew Forde bowled that from round the wicket and didn't even land the ball
- 13.41Matthew Forde to Ishan Kishan, 1 run, slower-ball off-cutter outside off, on a good length, Ishan Kishan gets forward to punch it on the rise to long-off
- 13.31Matthew Forde to Shreyas Iyer, 1 run, dropped by Shamar at long-on. He blames the lights. Never looked like he picked that. Was a half-volley outside off, Shreyas Iyer gets forward and lofts, doesn't get the elevation and it's a flat hit. Shamar is a good fielder but he made a mess of it. Hits him hard on the wrist and goes to ground. It keeps getting worse for West Indies
- 13.26Matthew Forde to Shreyas Iyer, SIX, the back of the hand slower-ball tried by Matthew Forde and that too disappears over long-on. What can West Indies do against such an onslaught. It sits up on a back of a length outside off, Shreyas Iyer gets forward and lofts over wide long-on. He waited and then didn't try to overhit at all. Consecutive sixes
- 13.16Matthew Forde to Shreyas Iyer, SIX, Shreyas Iyer has his sights set on the 100? It's a slower-ball on a length outside off, Shreyas picks it early, gets forward and lofts it straight down the ground. A clean clean hit. Was the slower-ball from the side of the hand
