IND vs WI, 5th T20I · Scorecard

Final overs

- The trophy is handed over to Shreyas Iyer and Shai Hope. That brings an end to West Indies' tour of India. They gave the hosts a real run for their money across both formats. While India clinched the ODI series 2-1, West Indies fought back to draw the T20I series 2-2. There were plenty of positives for the visitors, headlined by skipper Shai Hope's four centuries across the two formats. There were valuable contributions from others as well, and the challenge now will be to build on those performances going forward. India will next travel to New Zealand, where they begin their T20I series on Thursday (October 22). Do join us for that series. Until next time, goodbye and stay safe!
- Shreyas 2/2: [On Naman Dhir's opportunity and the strength of India's cricketing system] [On his conversations with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi about waiting for an opportunity] So I just keep telling him, you'll get your opportunity. You see there are two batters who have probably won the... not probably, they have won the World Cup for you, and they've been consistent with their run-scoring as well. So, you know, if you be consistent with your processes and your mindset is a bit light, not think too much about getting an opportunity right now. I know what must be going on in his mind, especially after a phenomenal IPL season. But you have to wait sometimes, and we've got two fantastic openers who have been consistent throughout. And yeah, that's the interaction I basically had with him, right from Afghanistan series. [On handling frequent travel and maintaining routines ahead of the New Zealand series] Yes, it's just like another day. We've been used to it, even constantly travelling in India. It's definitely not easy to recover and see to it that your routines are intact. But honestly speaking, we've been doing that pretty well, and we are adjusting to the conditions pretty fast. So as long as we are maintaining this consistently, it's good for the team.
- Shreyas Iyer | India captain 1/2: [On whether India could have won the series outright and his assessment of the 2-2 result] Well, it could have definitely been different, considering if we had bowled well in the second and the fourth game. Obviously, batting has been sensational throughout. It's just about that execution, which we were falling short, especially our bowlers were taking the ball. And also, you know, credit where it's due. They batted phenomenally well, and also Shai Hope, brilliant performance by him, the way he was cruising through in the series. It was difficult at times, but kudos to him. [On the positives from the series, particularly India's ability to bounce back after defeats] I think the ability to bounce back, even after a loss. We had this mindset that we want to get and play aggressive cricket and see to it that we are at top of our game. And we replicated in some instances, but we weren't able to repeat it and be consistent throughout. But it's a great learning and a lot of positives as well. Even today, the way we, you know, went about our batting, it was outstanding, and I hope that we keep repeating well, and it is going to be a challenging series in New Zealand now.
- Hope 2/2: [On not bowling Roston Chase in the final match] Yeah, just one of those things again. If Tilak was on strike for that over, Motie bowled the second one, I would probably have given Roston. But yeah, just how it goes sometimes. But I just feel the way how we played cricket in general, everyone was chipping in at certain stages. Sherfane continuing to do what he does in T20 format. Like I said, very pleasing from a bowling side of things to see the guys executing. [On his own batting performances and maintaining self-belief] You still have to have that self-belief. Honestly, whenever I cross the line, even if I haven't got any runs in the last two, three, four, five innings, I still believe that I can get the job done. I think that's what kind of keeps me going, keeps me grounded as well, knowing that even if I do score a 100 or I get a big score in the next game, still have to start from scratch. So my process never changes. I try to stay as neutral as I possibly can and just back, like I said, back my ability to get the job done. Because I prepare, I think well enough. So just allow that to happen and hopefully when the execution comes, it goes in my favor.
- Shai Hope | West Indies captain and Player of the Series 1/2: [On how close West Indies came to winning the series and the significance of their progress] We're very close. Something that we haven't done in so many years. I think it's 20-plus years or so. Not sure the exact number. But to get this far in the series, give ourselves a good chance of winning. It obviously shows what we are doing as a unit. It's certainly progressing. Success doesn't necessarily have to be series wins, but just seeing the way how the guys have been progressing as a team is very commendable. [On the positives from the T20I series, particularly the bowling performances] Like I said, quite a few, especially from the bowling front. We talk about guys executing their skills in pressure situations. Saw Shamar come in and Shamar Springer, that is coming in and playing that crucial role for us in the back end, getting some good wickets, bowling those death overs. Keemo Paul, similarly, and then you still had the likes of Roston, who has been consistent for us with the ball for so many years.

- The last time West Indies defeated India in a bilateral series in India (any format) was way back in 2002: 4-3 in a seven-match ODI series that had gone into the decider. The wait continues.

- 22:16 Local Time, 16:46 GMT: The inevitable has happened. The players are shaking hands. The game has been called off. It was always going to be touch and go, given the weather forecast, though there were positive signs in the morning when the probability of rain dropped from 70 to 30 percent. However, persistent drizzle prevented the ground staff from getting the conditions ready. The rain finally relented at 20:30 local time, allowing the toss to take place and a start time to be set. The crowd, who had waited patiently, were treated to a brief spell of action from Ishan Kishan and Naman Dhir, but in the end, the rain had the final say. The series ends 2-2.
- Take a look at India's brief innings, though. Ishan Kishan set the powerplay ablaze with a blistering 30 off just 10 balls. Following his departure, the middle order struggled to find rhythm, but Naman Dhir turned the tide with a few mighty blows in his brief stay at the crease before rain brought the action to a halt. West Indies will have to chase 84 in 5 overs. Going by the live visuals, it doesn't look like we’re in for any encouraging updates..
- 22:04 Local Time, 16:34 GMT: The drizzle has gotten heavier and the umpires have called on for the covers. With every passing moment, the intensity of rain is increasing. That might be all about India's innings I reckon. We'll wait for the official confirmation though. This was shaping up to be a real nail-biter, but the rain has returned once again, forcing the groundstaff to bring the covers back on. The square is now covered, and the run-up areas are covered as well. 10.21 local time is the cut-off for a 5-over run chase! India's innings has ended..

- 16* off 3 - Naman Dhir's 16 is the joint-most scored by an India batter off the first three balls of his innings. Dinesh Karthik too, had gone 6, 4, 6 off Rubel Hossain in the Nidahas Trophy 2018 final at RPS Colombo

- 7.21Shamar Springer to Naman Dhir, 1 run, full and quick on off, Naman Dhir chips it towards mid-off on the bounce
- 7.16Shamar Springer to Naman Dhir, SIX, Naman Dhir is batting like a dream at the moment. Has to be one of his finest knock in international cricket so far. This was pitched up by the bowler around off and Naman Dhir thumped it over long-off for another sublimely timed maximum

- 6.62Keemo Paul to Tilak Varma, 2 runs, back of a length delivery around middle and leg, Tilak Varma loses his shape while going for a pull, miscues it towards mid-wicket as the fielder charges in from the deep. Doesn't carry, as there wasn't enough power of timing behind the shot
- 6.51Keemo Paul to Naman Dhir, 1 run, full and quick on middle and leg, Naman Dhir flicks it towards deep mid-wicket for a single
- 6.46Keemo Paul to Naman Dhir, SIX, 100 up for India! A good length delivery outside off, slight width on offer, Naman Dhir effortlessly lofts it over long-off for six more. That was middled to perfection, and was all about timing. Should have been promoted up the order in this rain curtailed contest
- 6.4wdKeemo Paul to Naman Dhir, wide, under pressure he has fired a short and wide ball outside off, out of Naman Dhir's reach
- 6.34Keemo Paul to Naman Dhir, FOUR, he's off to a brisk start. Already 10 runs in 2 balls. This was slow, short and wide outside off, allows Naman Dhir to free his arms. He thumps it over mid-off, has enough elevation to clear the fielder as the ball races away to the boundary
- 6.26Keemo Paul to Naman Dhir, SIX, that's a first ball maximum for Naman Dhir! Looks like he was batting in the nets before walking in to bat. Picks the bones out of this back of a length delivery, whipping it over deep square leg for half-a-dozen. That came right off the meat of the bat
- Naman Dhir, right handed bat, comes to the crease
- 6.1WKeemo Paul to Shreyas Iyer, out Caught by Shamar Joseph!! A rusty knock by Shreyas Iyer comes to an end. Wasn't quite in his elements tonight. This was banged in short by Keemo Paul and Shreyas Iyer went for a pull. Miscues it towards deep mid-wicket, and Shamar holds on to another safe catch. He took Abhishek's catch earlier, now takes Iyer's catch. Safe hands in the field. Probably a blessing in disguise for India as Shreyas wasn't able to kick on. - Teams:
- India (Playing XI): Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson(w), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer(c), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prince Yadav, Arshdeep Singh
- West Indies (Playing XI): Shai Hope(w/c), Jewel Andrew, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Roston Chase, Keemo Paul, Shamar Springer, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph
- Shreyas Iyer: [On whether he would also have chosen to field first] Yeah, I would have fielded as well. [On the quick turnaround and the conditions after the rain] Yeah, it's a quick turnaround. Wasn't anticipating a game, honestly, looking at the rains. But yeah, the way the drainage system is over here, it's phenomenal. And talking about the wicket, it looks pretty good. [On India's approach in the series decider] Well, we just have to be aggressive in our approach and see to it that we are in top-notch attitude, not get pressed too much by the pressure, or, you know, they've been playing amazing cricket as well, but that doesn't mean that we are going to shrink. It's important that we put our best foot forward and see to it that we seize the game. [On West Indies being one of the best six-hitting sides in the world and the challenge that poses as captain] Absolutely. They've got an array of shots in different batsmen, and they've been playing solid cricket. They've been challenging in tough times, and obviously they've been playing power cricket. So we have all these things at the back of the mind, but at the same time we need to think about our strengths as well, the way we've been playing for the last couple of months, and it has been sensational. [On India's team combination and changes for the match] We've got two changes: Shivam Dube comes in and Bhuvi comes in.
- Shai Hope: [On the decision to bowl first and the conditions] Yeah, it does, but obviously rain around as well. Expected to get a little bit wetter. But yeah, it's a good pitch, and we just want to give ourselves the best chance of chasing. [On whether a shortened nine-over game suits their style of play] I feel like it does. If I say yes, you would say so. No, we tend to have a lot of batters, especially deep. But we've got to start with the ball. That's our main focus right now: make sure we execute as best as we can in a shortened game and give ourselves the best chance. [On the team's character in coming back from behind twice in the series] Yeah, for sure. There's a lot of positives that you can take from this tour in both areas, bat and ball. And I just think we just got to continue from in this vein and hopefully we can finish the series strong, but we can give ourselves an opportunity to do something very special in India. So guys are looking forward to it. Same team.
- West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field
- "Bhuvi, Bishnoi and Axar bowling in the side pitch under the close watch of Gambhir and Morne. Practice much less intense in West Indies camp; not everyone in the squad is yet out there. Motie bowling on the side wicket; Hope and Rovman knocking a few (balls). Prince Yadav too has marked the run-up while Mayank is bowling in the side nets," informs Deepu.
- Pitch and Conditions: "The surface itself has been under cover since we arrived at the ground until a couple of minutes ago, and with all the rain around in Bangalore and over the Chinnaswamy over the last few days, there's bound to be some moisture under the surface, but on top it looks good. It may seem to be a little bit slow. There might be some lateral movement. It's a 9-over game, and the powerplay constitutes 2.4 overs. So look, it's anyone's guess. I think with all the moisture in the outfield, teams might prefer to know what they want to chase in this very important final game of this five-match series," reads Ian Bishop.
- Raghu makes his way out with the kit bag, and is followed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and there's a loud cheer from the Chinnaswamy crowd on seeing him. Slowly the rest of the Indian players join in and they are starting their warm-ups. Abhishesk Sharma is standing behind the wicket and is visualising his batting before walking down the pitch along with Daren Sammy. Toss will be at 21:00 local. Match will be begin at 21:15 local. It will be a 9 overs per side game with the powerplay being 2.4 overs.
- 20:40 Local Time, 15:10 GMT: "I'm told the match will be played on the central wicket, which should be pitch #7. First sight of the wicket and it does look dry. Covers from bowler runups also cleared. Stumps about to be erected. Raghu, India's throwdown specialist, has a look at the wicket and runs back. No player from either team is out in the middle yet. Two super soppers in the outfield of which one is at work," informs Deepu.
- 20:30 Local Time, 15:00 GMT: Well, well! The ground staff are rushing onto the ground. They are starting to remove the covers. "Some water on the sheets and the cover from the square comes off to huge cheers," pings Deepu. Now, reserve umpire Virender Sharma is making his way out to the middle. Venkatesh Prasad, KSCA President, and Sujith Somasundar, KSCA Vice-President, are checking the pitch and conditions, having a word with Sharma. The two umpires - Nitin Menon and Rohan Pandit - are also out in the middle. Meanwhile, the West Indies players are keeping a keen eye on the proceedings.
- 19:50 Local Time, 14:20 GMT: We started losing overs from 19:45 local. And the drizzle is not relenting. The update is the same - covers in place, no activity from the groundstaff and the wait continues..
- Samson (2/2): [Your preparation for New Zealand?] To be very honest, with the way the schedule is structured these days, you don't get much time to practice or prepare. That's where your experience comes in. You try to stay in a good mental space and make the most of whatever time you get. We have just one day of batting practice. We'll reach there on the 20th, practice on the 21st, and play the match on the 22nd. So, we'll try to carry forward the good things we've done here. It takes a little time to adjust to the conditions there, so we'll take two or three balls to assess them. We'll follow the things we've learned through experience and play while respecting the conditions.
- Sanju Samson (Translated from Hindi) (1/2): [Performing well in the World Cup, definitely gives you a lot of confidence. How do you carry that confidence forward?] It definitely gives you a lot of confidence. After that, you start understanding your own patterns. You focus on your process, reduce the outside noise, and figure out your own way of creating the best environment in your mind to go out there and perform. Sometimes you score runs, and sometimes you don't. So, I try to understand that, stay grounded, and continue playing fearless cricket. [When it keeps raining and the match doesn't start, what's going through your mind?] We're missing someone like you (Chahal) in the dressing room! Someone who can keep the atmosphere light. When it's raining, there's not much point in thinking too much about cricket at that moment. Bishnoi and Arshdeep are keeping themselves occupied, so you know how things go in the dressing room.
- 19:23 Local Time, 13:53 GMT: "Nothing new to update. Still that steady drizzle and absolutely no activity whatsoever. Crowd has built up, close to 80% full now. A few kites circling around for their preys that aside no one else in the playing area," messages Deepu. "Rain intensifies. Hopefully it subsides after this spell," he quickly adds.
- 18:50 Local Time, 13:20 GMT: "We will start losing overs after 30 minutes of start time; latest start for a 5-over game is 9:41 PM - official scorer informs." - pings Deepu.
- 18:30 Local Time, 13:00 GMT: The toss has been delayed. The drizzle has also picked up pace, it is a heavier now. "Stands about 50% filled," pings Deepu, and they are being entertained by the DJ. The two teams are in the dressing room looking quite relaxed and waiting for the rain to stop.
- 18:15 Local Time, 12:45 GMT: FYI, the two teams arrived a few minutes ago. But they have not started their warm-up drills because it's still raining and the covers are in place. The toss will surely be delayed given the current conditions. "Still only a drizzle, the kind where play would have continued had they been out in the middle," latest update from Deepu.
