West Indies ChampionsBatter
Lendl Simmons is a Trinidad and Tobago opening batsman whose uncle, Phil Simmons, was an allrounder for the West Indies. Simmons became a dependable presence at the top of the order for his island side, and his international grounding came early: he played for the West Indies at two Under-19 World Cups, in 2002 and 2004.
His path to Test cricket opened in 2009, when he struck 282 against England A, the best first-class innings of his career. That effort earned him a place in the West Indies team for the Tests against the full England side that followed. The long format never quite rewarded him in the same way, though, and his top score at Test level is 49.
The white-ball game proved a far better fit. Simmons hits the ball cleanly and has more recently learned how to pace an innings, and he became a central figure in the West Indies limited-overs set-up. Selectors paid closer attention after the first Caribbean Premier League, in which he made 266 runs for Guyana Amazon Warriors.
In 2014 Mumbai brought him into their IPL squad in place of Jalaj Saxena, and he seized the chance, piling up 490 runs across 11 matches, his maiden T20 century among them. That run secured him a regular T20I berth. He went to the 2014 World T20 in Bangladesh but did not shine, and the West Indies were knocked out in the semi-finals. He was then picked in the 15-man squad for the 2015 World Cup.
The 2015 season brought a rapid hundred against Ireland and a half-century against Pakistan, and he played a major role as Mumbai Indians won the IPL that year. His most celebrated moment came in a World T20 semi-final against India. A back injury had initially kept him out of the tournament, but he was summoned as cover for the injured Andre Fletcher shortly before the semi-final, where his 82 from 51 balls won him the Man of the Match award and sent the West Indies into a final they went on to win.
