West Indies ChampionsBowler
Fidel Edwards is a Barbados fast bowler whose early showings for his island were impressive enough to catch the eye of the West Indies selectors. He rewarded their faith straight away, taking five wickets in his first match for the West Indies, against Sri Lanka in 2003. His first one-day international was just as striking, with figures of 6/22 from 7 overs.
His bowling action has been compared to that of Jeff Thompson. Raw speed is his main weapon, backed by an ability to make the ball reverse swing. Injuries and uneven form have repeatedly interrupted his career. In 2007, after two lean series against England and South Africa, he lost his place in the Test squad and missed selection for the World Cup that year. His absence was short, and on his return he collected five wickets in an innings against England.
On the 2008-09 trip to New Zealand he produced a spell of 7 for 87 and passed 100 wickets along the way, and he went on to lead the attack. When England toured the Caribbean in 2009 he bowled well, yet his most memorable work came with the bat. Alongside Daren Powell he held out to save a draw, and he did it again in the final Test, helping his side clinch the series.
An injury at the 2009 T20 World Cup halted that run. He abandoned his rehabilitation in the West Indies partway through to join the Deccan Chargers in the IPL, a choice that backfired when he sustained a stress fracture. He did not play for his country again until the middle of 2011, when he bowled with pace and hostility in a home Test series against India that the West Indies lost 0-1.
A back injury later forced him out of the home series against Australia. He was brought in as an emergency replacement for the injured Kemar Roach on the tour of Bangladesh and took 7 wickets in his only Test there. Continued injury problems and the return of Ravi Rampaul have since pushed him down the pecking order, though Barbados still count on him.
