Josh Davey was 19 when he first appeared in county cricket for Middlesex. He remained with them for four seasons, and the club released him once 2013 came to a close.
What he did at Middlesex was enough to earn him a first cap in one-day internationals, and he made an instant impression in that format, returning figures of 5 for 9 against Afghanistan. In 2012 he also starred in a Twenty20 international, claiming 3 for 23 as Scotland defeated Bangladesh. That result was historic, marking Scotland's first win over an ICC Full Member nation.
Even so, his displays were uneven. Alongside the occasional standout performance came stretches of inconsistency that stopped him from nailing down a permanent place with Scotland, and he was left out when the team contested the World Cup Qualifiers in 2014.
His fortunes picked up later that year. He signed a contract with the Somerset Second XI and was brought back into the Scotland setup for a one-day international against England, repaying that faith with three wickets. The summer of 2014 proved more productive for him overall, and a run of steady showings on the tour arranged to acclimatise the squad ahead of the World Cup secured him a place among the 15 players picked for the tournament.
