ScotlandAll-rounder
Tom Bruce is a right-handed batsman with an attacking style that fits naturally into Twenty20 cricket. He first drew wide attention during the 2015-16 Super Smash, when he scored freely against opposition attacks. That breakthrough helped him become a central figure for Central Districts, and he went on to establish himself in their side in every format.
Bruce plays aggressively. Much of his scoring comes square of the wicket on both the off and leg sides, but he can also drive powerfully straight down the ground. One of his more unusual habits is sweeping fast bowlers, a shot he plays with apparent comfort.
His returns in the shortest format earned him a place in New Zealand's Twenty20 International side, although his contributions at that level have so far been modest. In domestic first-class cricket he has been a dependable presence in the Central Districts middle order. He brings the same positive approach to the longer game, and that attacking intent can shift the course of a match.
In one-day cricket Bruce is a useful hitter, but consistency has been a problem. At times he has not appeared settled enough to construct a long innings, which stands out given his first-class record. He also bowls off-spin, though only in a part-time role. Overall he is regarded as an aggressive white-ball option and remains under consideration by the New Zealand selectors.
