West IndiesBatter
Tagenarine Brandon Chanderpaul is a left-handed batsman from Guyana and the son of West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul. He has been tipped as a possible figurehead for the coming generation of West Indies batting, and observers frequently point out how closely his game mirrors his father's.
The likenesses are plain to see. Like Shivnarine, he bats left-handed with a notably high backlift, and he brings a calm, clear head and intense concentration to the crease. He has also adopted his father's habit of tapping the bail into the ground to mark his guard.
His development came through the age-group system, where he played at Under-17 and Under-19 level. Before that, in 2011, the Guyana Cricket Board named him its Under-15 Cricketer of the Year. In March 2013 he made his first-class debut for Guyana in a match against the Leewards, sharing the field with his father.
The 2014 Under-19 World Cup, held in the UAE, gave him a bigger stage. Across 6 matches he scored 293 runs, a tally that featured one century and two half-centuries. Comparisons with Shivnarine seem certain to follow him, but those early returns suggested he could meet the high expectations placed on him.
Away from batting, he has an unusual skill: he can bowl with either arm.
