West IndiesBowler
Jomel Warrican is a Barbadian cricketer who bowls left-arm spin and can also contribute useful runs batting in the lower order. He first came to wider notice in 2010, when West Indies picked him for the Under-19 World Cup held in New Zealand. At that point his senior experience amounted to a single List A appearance. Across three matches at the tournament he collected 5 wickets.
His breakthrough at domestic level came in the 2014-15 first-class season, which proved outstanding for him. He ended the campaign with 49 wickets at an average of 14.97, and on two separate occasions he claimed 8 wickets in an innings. Those returns came at a time when the established left-arm spin options for West Indies were faltering: Sulieman Benn was finding it hard to hold on to his spot, while Veerasammy Permaul had not capitalised on the chances given to him. That situation left the door open for Warrican.
The selectors duly turned to him in October 2015, including him in the Test party for the tour of Sri Lanka in place of Permaul. His first Test, played in Colombo, brought an impressive beginning, with Warrican taking 6 wickets on debut.
He retained his place for the subsequent tour of Australia, but conditions there offered far less assistance to his style of bowling. He found wickets hard to come by, finishing the trip with just 5 of them while giving away 380 runs.
