Harry Brook first appeared in first-class cricket for Yorkshire against Pakistan A in 2016, when he was still a schoolboy. A year later, after a run of strong displays for the second XI, he made his County Championship bow. His first first-class century came at Chelmsford against Essex: having been dismissed for a three-ball duck as an opener when Yorkshire were bowled out for 50, he moved to number three and made 124, and Yorkshire went on to win. Even so, red-ball consistency took time to arrive.
The shorter formats gave him his early profile. He captained England at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, scoring 102 against Bangladesh to become only the second Englishman after Alastair Cook to hit a hundred at that level, and he finished as the team's top scorer with 239 runs. In the 2021 T20 Blast, batting at four, he led Yorkshire's run charts with 486 at an average of 69.42 and a strike rate of 149.07. He also turned out for the Northern Superchargers in the first edition of The Hundred and struck his maiden T20 century for Islamabad United in the 2022 PSL.
England picked him for a T20I series against the West Indies in early 2022, where he made 10 in his only game. A quiet Test debut followed that summer, as he batted once and scored 12. He was also in the squad that won the 2022 T20 World Cup, though he managed only 56 runs across 5 innings.
His Test breakthrough came in Pakistan, where he made three hundreds and a fifty in a 3-0 England win, topping the series aggregates with 468 runs at 93.6 and a strike rate of 93.41. In New Zealand he again led the scoring, arriving at 21/3 in the first Test to hit 186 from 174 balls during a 302-run partnership. England lost that match by 1 run, Brook being run out without facing in the second innings, before he added 89 and 54 in the next Test. During the 2023 home Ashes, where he made 363 runs at 40.41, he reached 1000 Test runs in 1058 balls, the fastest by deliveries faced.
Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him for INR 13.25 crore for the 2023 IPL, but a century against KKR was his lone standout effort as he struggled against spin at the top of the order. Released afterwards, he joined Delhi Capitals for 2024 at INR 4 crore.
