EnglandWicketkeeper batter
Tom Banton is a wicketkeeper-batsman for Somerset who first made his mark in English domestic cricket in 2017. Before reaching the county game, he developed within the Warwickshire setup and went on to represent England at under-19 level. Those who watched him in those years could clearly see his talent.
Somerset signed him to play in the T20 Blast, with the deal covering the 2017-18 season. A year later he made his first appearances for the county in its other formats, and he has held a regular place in the Somerset side since then.
Banton's batting is far from textbook, and he is very quick with the gloves behind the stumps. His game appears especially well suited to white-ball cricket. His 2019 T20 Blast campaign was an outstanding one that showed how far he had come. Observers were struck not only by how many runs he made but also by the way he used inventive, unorthodox shots to work the field. Some have already suggested he could one day succeed Jos Buttler.
That form earned him a place in England's T20 squad for their tour of New Zealand late in 2019. His career is still at an early stage.
