Ben McDermott

His senior career began in Queensland, where he earned a rookie contract with the Bulls in 2013. That summer he appeared for Brisbane Heat in the 2013-14 Big Bash League, debuting at 19 against Adelaide Strikers and making 30 in what proved to be his sole game of the season. Straight after that tournament he travelled to the UAE as wicketkeeper for Australia at the under-19 World Cup, playing a key role in a side that ended the event in fourth place.

Life in Queensland's domestic setup was difficult at first, so in 2014 he moved to Tasmania on a rookie deal. The switch paid off at once: on his Sheffield Shield debut against Victoria at the MCG he struck 65. His profile rose sharply during the sixth Big Bash League season, when, batting at No. 3 for Hobart Hurricanes against Melbourne Renegades, he hammered a hundred that included 8 fours and 9 sixes against an attack featuring Sunil Narine, James Pattinson and Brad Hogg. Roughly two months later he reached his first first-class century, against South Australia.

Those efforts earned him national selection in 2018 for a T20I series against Pakistan, although his first international appearance came in a one-off T20I against the UAE that followed. He made his ODI debut against the West Indies in 2021, and later that year he became the first batter to score centuries in consecutive Big Bash League innings.
