South AustraliaAll-rounder
Jake Lehmann is a left-handed batsman whose father, Darren Lehmann, played cricket for Australia. The family link is obvious, but the attention Jake has attracted since he was very young has been earned by his own clean striking of the ball, a trait he shares with his father.
He has shown he can bat for long periods too. Late in 2015 he reached his maiden first-class hundred and kept going until he had turned it into a double century. The 2015-16 Sheffield Shield season was where his talent first began to show up consistently in the scorebook, and it remains the strongest stretch of his career so far.
His arrival in the Big Bash League, which came soon after that double hundred, was dramatic. Playing for the Adelaide Strikers in what was his very first Twenty20 innings, he faced the final ball with four runs still needed and calmly hit it for six to win the match.
Lehmann offers more than his batting. Like his father, he bowls left-arm spin, although that side of his game has yet to reach the same level of effectiveness. He is also a very capable fielder, and that mix of skills makes him an appealing all-round option.
Any step up to national honours will have to come on merit. Darren Lehmann has repeatedly said he does not put his son forward when selection is discussed. Jake had a reasonably productive domestic year in 2017, and the challenge now is to lift his output further.
