Papua New GuineaWicketkeeper batter
Tony Ura is a wicket-keeper who also opens the batting for Papua New Guinea, and he is counted among the standout cricketers his country has produced. Ever since he broke into the national side, he has had a real influence on how PNG play.
Cricket runs in his family. His father and his brother were both gifted players, and each of them turned out for PNG at age-group level at some stage. Tony would go on to climb further in the game than either of them.
His rise to prominence came in 2008. Through a series of eye-catching displays, he helped PNG earn a place at the U19 World Cup. The attention that followed brought him a contract with a club in Australia, where he kept working on and refining his game.
At the top of the order he plays with an attacking mindset, and he can dismantle a bowling attack through fierce, uncompromising shot-making. He has delivered steadily for PNG in the years since his breakthrough. In April 2019 his country secured ODI status, a milestone that brought his journey with the national team to a fitting point.
