England ChampionsAll-rounder
Ravi Bopara rose through the ranks at Essex, where he secured a professional deal at 17. His work with both bat and ball soon impressed, and the selectors began to see him as a prospect. He went on to become England's second Sikh cricketer, after Monty Panesar.
His first England opportunity came in the CB series against Australia in 2007, and he was then picked for that year's World Cup. Against Sri Lanka in the super-six stage he stayed calm to register his first ODI half-century, although England were beaten by three runs. His Test debut, also against Sri Lanka in 2007, went badly. Three ducks to begin with led many observers to question whether he was suited to the longer game, and he spent time on the edge of the side while proving useful in one-day cricket.
His fortunes changed in 2009. Called up for the fourth Test against the West Indies at Bridgetown after Andrew Flintoff was injured, he made his first Test hundred in a high-scoring draw. When the West Indies toured England soon after, he added hundreds at Lord's and Chester-le-Street, becoming only the fifth Englishman to complete a hat-trick of centuries. The 2009 Ashes were less kind, with Ben Hilfenhaus troubling him throughout.
In the 2011 World Cup his 60 against South Africa in a low-scoring contest earned him the Man of the Match award. In Tests he struggled for a regular spot, with Eoin Morgan preferred, though he returned as cover for the injured Jonathan Trott for the last two Tests against India. Useful ODI displays against Australia were followed by a difficult Test series against South Africa. He batted attractively at the 2013 Champions Trophy, where England lost the final to India, and later that year struck his first ODI century in a one-off match against Ireland in Dublin.
England came to use him as a finisher alongside Jos Buttler. At the 2015 World Cup he played only the final game, against Afghanistan, after England were already out, taking 2/31 without batting in a nine-wicket win. He was bought by the SunRisers Hyderabad in the 2015 IPL auction.
