Andy McBrine

His first-class career began in May 2013, when Ireland met Scotland. Batting at No.8 on that occasion, he made 21. His List A bow followed in January 2014 in the Nagico Super50 competition, where he faced Guyana but went without a wicket.

International honours arrived in March 2014, when Ireland played the opening round of the World T20 in Bangladesh. Against Zimbabwe on debut he claimed 2/26. The next match, against the Netherlands, was tougher: he did not take a wicket and was struck for 24 runs in one over. From that point he became a regular presence in Ireland's limited-overs sides, with his ability to contribute with both bat and ball working in his favour.

After a reasonable showing on Ireland's preparatory tour of Australia and New Zealand, McBrine was included in the 15-player squad for the World Cup. He featured in three matches at the tournament and finished with three wickets on pitches that offered little help to bowlers.

Selectors have kept a close watch on him since his youth cricket, and although his form has not always been steady, he has remained on the edge of the national picture. That faith was reflected when he was picked for Ireland's first-ever Test squad, earning selection ahead of George Dockrell.
