Ryan Klein

Klein's early cricket was with Western Province, where he made both his First Class and List A debuts in 2019. His younger brother Kyle had already taken a Dutch path, playing for the Netherlands at the 2019 under 19 World Cup Qualifiers. Two years later Ryan made the same move. He played club cricket in the Topklasse, starting at HBS Craeyenhout and later moving to Voorburg CC.

His progress into the national setup was rapid. He was named in a strong Netherlands A squad that toured Ireland in 2021, and about seven months afterwards he earned a senior ODI debut against Afghanistan in January 2022. In August that year he played his first T20Is, in a two-match home series against New Zealand, and those two games are still his only appearances in that format. His ODI chances have also been irregular, because he has often stepped aside when players on county contracts became available.

Klein has still made his opportunities count. At the 2023 World Cup Qualifier, where the Dutch campaign ended in success, he was the side's most economical bowler. He took 9 wickets at an average of 25 and went for under 4.5 runs an over. His club form has kept him in the selectors' minds too, especially his 6-15 in the 2023 Topklasse final, which won the title for Voorburg.

He is not the fastest or the most aggressive member of the Dutch pace group. His value lies in his relentless accuracy and in the potential he has shown with the bat.
