Virat Kohli first drew wide attention as the captain who led India to the Under-19 World Cup title in Kuala Lumpur in 2008. By August that year he was in the senior squad in Sri Lanka, opening in an ODI series India won. He kept scoring for Delhi, then made 398 runs in 7 games at the 2009 Emerging Players tournament in Australia, including a century in the final against South Africa. His first ODI hundred came in a chase against Sri Lanka in December 2009, and in the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai he added 83 with Gautam Gambhir after India lost both openers early.
His Test debut came in the West Indies in July 2011. He struggled at first in Australia, adjusted his stance to make 75 at Perth, and then scored India's only hundred of that series at Adelaide. On the same tour he hit an unbeaten 133 from 86 balls at Hobart as India chased 321 in 40 overs against Sri Lanka. He was India's top ODI run-getter in 2010, 2011 and 2012, was named ICC ODI cricketer of the year in 2012, and in October 2018 became the fastest to 10,000 ODI runs, needing 54 fewer innings than Sachin Tendulkar.
As Test captain he scored two hundreds, including 141, as stand-in at Adelaide, came from behind to win 2-1 in Sri Lanka, and in 2018-19 became the first Asian captain to win a Test series in Australia. India were the top-ranked Test side from 2016 to 2021. He married actress Anushka Sharma, and he later gave up the T20I, ODI and Test captaincies, with Rohit Sharma succeeding him.
Between April 2019 and September 2022 he made no international century, a drought ended against Afghanistan at the Asia Cup. He was India's leading scorer at the 2022 T20 World Cup and player of the tournament at the 2023 ODI World Cup with 765 runs at 95.63, becoming the first batter to reach 50 ODI hundreds. After the 2024 IPL Orange Cap, his 76 in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa helped India win, and he then quit T20Is. A Champions Trophy hundred against Pakistan followed in 2025, and in May 2025 he retired from Tests with 9230 runs at 46.85.
In the IPL he has played only for Royal Challengers Bangalore since 2008, captaining them from 2012. His 973 runs in 2016, with four hundreds, took the side to the final, and he became the league's leading run-scorer, though a title had eluded him as of March 2023.
