Hashmatullah Shahidi is a left-handed batter for Afghanistan who has become a dependable presence in both the ODI and Test sides. His value lies in patience and steadiness rather than power: he does not rely on big hitting or the inventive strokes associated with T20 cricket, preferring to build his innings gradually.

He first played international cricket in 2013, when he was 18 and Afghanistan were still finding their feet at the top level. Establishing himself took time. For several years his place was uncertain, and he moved in and out of the side without settling into a regular role.
The year 2018 brought a turning point. He was in the XI for Afghanistan's maiden Test, played against India in Bengaluru. Later that year he made three successive half-centuries at the Asia Cup, a tournament in which Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh and pushed both Pakistan and India hard in tight contests.
Shahidi went to the 2019 ODI World Cup with Afghanistan and passed fifty against England and against New Zealand. In 2021 he produced a Test double-hundred against Zimbabwe, the first of two double centuries he has made in the format. A few months after that innings he was named captain of the Test and ODI teams.
His leadership was on show at the 2023 ODI World Cup, where Afghanistan recorded victories over Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. Shahidi contributed half-centuries in a couple of those matches.
