VictoriaWicketkeeper batter
Peter Handscomb is an Australian wicketkeeper-batsman, born in Melbourne on 26 April 1991 to British parents who had moved to Australia before his birth. He also played junior tennis, which gave him an understanding of how spin acts on a ball. He came through Victoria's under-17 and under-19 sides and played for the Australia under-19 team against Sri Lanka under-19 in 2009. Strong displays for St. Kilda in the Victorian Premier League and for the Leicestershire Second XI then earned him a contract with Victoria.
Opening the batting on his Sheffield Shield debut in 2011-12, he made 71 against Queensland at the Gabba. A century of 113 at the Adelaide Oval in 2012, along with keeping wicket while Matthew Wade was unavailable, led to a Big Bash deal with the Melbourne Stars for 2012-13. In 2015 he joined Gloucestershire as an overseas player to try his game against the Dukes ball, and he was named in Australia's ODI squad to tour England that year without playing a match. The Rising Pune Supergiants, captained by MS Dhoni, signed him at the 2016 IPL auction.
Handscomb's Test chance came in 2016 after Australia lost a home series to South Africa with a game still to play. He marked his debut with a fifty and struck the winning runs. Against Pakistan at home he scored his first Test hundred, 105 at the Gabba, and added another in Sydney. His back-foot, bottom-hand method brings the bat down from the direction of gully, leaving him exposed to balls seaming in, which is how he fell on debut in Adelaide.
In India he passed 25 only once in eight innings, yet his concentration stood out. At Ranchi in the third Test he arrived at 63/4 and, alongside Shaun Marsh, batted through 71 overs, finishing on 72 not out to save the match. Later that year his 82 helped Australia win the Chittagong Test against Bangladesh. In the 2017/18 Ashes he managed 62 runs from three innings over the first two Tests and was left out for Perth.
After moving in and out of both Test and ODI sides, he replaced Shaun Marsh at the 2019 World Cup but did little of note. His next Test came in India in 2023, after which he was again passed over. In the Big Bash he moved from the Stars to the Hobart Hurricanes in 2020/21, later went uncontracted, and returned as a replacement player for the Renegades in 2022/23 and the Stars in 2023/24.
