Todd Murphy is an off-spinner from Echuca in Victoria. He is easy to pick out on the field, standing tall and wearing glasses. His senior career started in the 2020/21 season, when he played his first matches in all three domestic formats: first-class, List-A and T20. Selectors noticed him almost straight away.
What set Murphy apart from the other slow bowlers under consideration was his method. He runs through the crease briskly and bowls his off-spin faster than many of his peers, usually sticking to a tight line. That difference helped him earn a place in Australia's squad for the 2023 tour of India. The pick drew plenty of attention, because he had only seven first-class appearances behind him when he was named.
His first Test was at Nagpur, and he finished that match with figures of 7/124. He went on to play in every one of the four Tests in the series. He kept his place for the Ashes series in England that followed. Murphy also bats left-handed and can be useful lower in the order, and he chipped in with some helpful runs as well as his wickets.
