Cameron Bancroft, born on 19 November 1992, is a Western Australian cricketer who bats right-handed and can also keep wicket. Before reaching senior level he represented Australia at Under-19 level, and observers in Australia have long admired the patience and sound technique he brings to the crease.
His senior career with Western Australia began in one-day cricket in 2011. He moved into first-class cricket in 2013-14, opening the batting across 11 matches in a campaign that took the Warriors to the Sheffield Shield final. A one-day hundred against the visiting United Arab Emirates side came the next season, and a Shield campaign in which he amassed 896 runs left him third among the competition's leading scorers. For Australia A he scored 150 against India A in Chennai on a pitch that favoured spin.
Selectors named him in a Test squad for a 2015 Bangladesh tour that was later called off over security worries, and his first international appearance eventually came in a T20 match against India in January 2016. After Chris Rogers retired, several candidates were tried as David Warner's opening partner, Matt Renshaw among them. With Renshaw short of runs following an injury, Bancroft was preferred for the 2017-18 Ashes and marked his Test debut at the Gabba with an unbeaten half-century in the second innings.
His career was badly damaged in March 2018, when television cameras showed him tampering with the ball during the Newlands Test in South Africa. He at first denied it to the umpires before admitting he had panicked and lied. The ICC fined him 75 percent of his match fee, and Cricket Australia banned him from all cricket for nine months.
After the ban he played 11 Big Bash games for the Perth Scorchers in 2018-2019, making 298 runs at a strike rate close to 125, including a match-winning 87 not out. He also captained Durham, scoring 726 runs in 9 division two matches. He returned for the 2019 Ashes but lost his place after the first two Tests. A strong 2022/23 Shield season revived talk of him replacing the retiring Warner, though Steve Smith was moved up to open instead. In 2023 he left the Scorchers for the Sydney Thunder on a three-year contract.
