Ravikumar Samarth is a Bangalore-born right-hander who opens the batting for Karnataka and can also send down the odd spell of off-spin. His path into the state's Ranji Trophy side opened up when KL Rahul and Manish Pandey moved on to represent India, which allowed Samarth to settle in as a regular at the top of the order.
Before his senior career began, he featured in several age-group competitions. His first-class bow for Karnataka came in the 2013-14 season, when he went in first and scored 75 against Mumbai. In the 2015-16 domestic campaign he gathered 487 runs, averaging a little over 40.
The 2016-17 season marked his real arrival. Samarth finished as Karnataka's top run-getter with 702 runs at 46.80, and the national selectors took note. When Abhinav Mukund was injured, Samarth was brought in as his replacement for the India A trip to South Africa, a tour built around two unofficial four-day Tests.
He kept up his output in the 2017/18 Ranji Trophy, making 652 runs from 12 innings at an average of 59.27. Those runs were central to Karnataka's progress to the semi-finals, and the side went on to lift the Vijay Hazare Trophy a few months afterwards. Despite that form, no franchise picked him up at the IPL auction.
The selectors kept faith with him, naming him, then aged 25, in the India A squad for a four-day tour of England after the IPL. He made an immediate impact there, striking a match-defining 127 in the second innings against Windies A.
