His first appearance in the IPL came in 2023 with the Lucknow Super Giants. Over his time with that franchise he produced solid returns, collecting nearly 25 wickets in Lucknow colours. The standout performance of his IPL career so far came against the Gujarat Titans at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, where he finished with five wickets. His victims that day were Shubman Gill, Vijay Shankar, Rashid Khan, Rahul Tewatia and Noor Ahmad.
At the IPL auction held in Jeddah, the Punjab Kings secured his services for 1.60 crore rupees. Thakur relies on a range of variations to trouble batters, and his slower ball in particular has a reputation for deceiving them.
