Kartik Tyagi is a fast-medium seamer whose main weapon is swing, which he can move in either direction at a moderate pace. He shares a home region with two well-known exponents of the craft, Praveen Kumar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and he first caught international attention at the U19 World Cup in 2020. There, observers noted his pace, but they were struck even more by the movement he found through the air and sometimes off the surface. Once the ball gets older, he can change his speeds and bowl yorkers.

His first IPL side was Rajasthan Royals, and his maiden season in 2020 brought him 9 wickets along with early signs that he could handle the closing overs. The defining moment of his time there came in 2021. In a last over against Punjab Kings, he protected a target of only 4 runs, a performance that showed he could stay calm under pressure. Across his IPL appearances to date he has played 20 matches and taken roughly 15 wickets, usually as a back-up seam option rather than the leading attacker.
That high point was not followed by steady progress. Spells with Sunrisers Hyderabad and then Gujarat Titans brought few chances, and he did not secure a regular spot in the starting line-up. Injuries and competition for places kept his outings irregular, so his potential went largely unrealised over several seasons.
He now joins Kolkata Knight Riders at a key point in his career. With several of the franchise's leading fast bowlers injured, he is expected to get opportunities in the playing XI. His likely job is to keep things tight in the middle overs and to use his yorkers when the innings reaches its final stages. If he can turn his natural ability and occasional brilliance into consistent output, he has the chance to move from the fringes and become a dependable Indian seam option in the tournament.
