His first-class career began with Canterbury when he was 20 years old. Since that debut he has risen to become captain of the same team, a rise that has been described as something close to a fairy tale.
For Canterbury he has been a dependable contributor across all three formats of the game. His batting has developed steadily over the years, and he has a habit of producing brief but valuable innings when his side has found itself in difficult situations.
Leadership has become a notable part of his profile. He has captained a number of sides, among them a New Zealand XI that faced Bangladesh, and he has been identified as a possible future leader of New Zealand.
