CanterburyBatter
Bowes is a right-handed batsman who can also send down medium pace as an occasional bowler. He is one of a number of cricketers who have left South Africa and moved abroad in search of greater opportunity to build a career in the game.
His profile first rose in junior international cricket. At the 2012 Under-19 World Cup, staged in Australia, he captained the South African side and was among its more reliable scorers throughout the event. He guided the team as far as the semi-finals, where the campaign ended in defeat to the host nation, Australia.
Finding chances scarce at home, Bowes relocated to New Zealand in 2015. In doing so he followed a route previously taken by other South African-born players such as Grant Elliott, Neil Wagner and Kruger van Wyk. He made his first appearance for Canterbury in February 2016, and his maiden hundred for the side arrived in November.
From there he became a steady source of runs for Canterbury. His most productive stretch came in the 2017/18 Plunket Shield, a competition in which no batsman scored more runs than he did. In June 2018, Canterbury secured his services for longer, with Bowes agreeing to a contract extension that would keep him with the team until 2021.
