Jayant Yadav

His batting has also mattered. In 2012 his first century grew into an innings of 211, part of a 392-run partnership for the eighth wicket alongside Amit Mishra. He is regarded as a lower-order batsman with sound technique against both pace and spin. With the ball, he finished as Haryana's leading wicket-taker in 2014-15 and came to be seen as one of the country's shrewdest and calmest off-spinners.

Recognition followed. He played for India A in home series against South Africa and Bangladesh, working under coach Rahul Dravid, and the Delhi Daredevils signed him in 2015, handing him an IPL debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He never secured a regular place there but offered economical spells when picked. In 2016 he was named in India's ODI squad for a tour of Zimbabwe.

His Test debut came against England at Visakhapatnam, where he took four wickets in the match and made scores of 37 and 26 not out. In Mohali he added a half-century and 4 wickets. At the Wankhede he managed only one wicket, that of Joe Root, but struck his first Test hundred as India won the five-match series 4-0.

That peak proved short-lived. After Kuldeep Yadav's success against Australia at Dharamsala in 2017, India leaned towards wrist-spinners and the pace-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya, leaving little room for finger-spinning all-rounders. Jayant kept performing in domestic cricket, but his prospects of an international return faded over the years.
