His early representative cricket came at youth level. He was a member of the Jamaica Under-19 side that won the regional championships, and he went on to represent the West Indies at two Under-19 World Cups, in 2010 and 2012. Neither tournament was especially productive for him: the first went poorly, and the second offered little of note until the final play-off match, in which he made a century to end his youth career on a high.
After his age-group years he moved into domestic cricket, and Jamaica gave him his first-class debut early in 2014. His returns at that level were modest, and for a time he hovered at the edge of national selection, yet the selectors kept backing him.
That faith led to a Test debut in early 2019, when England toured the Caribbean. Campbell appeared unsettled at first but finished the series with respectable figures for a newcomer. He then featured in the One-Day International series that came next, where he had the opportunity to open the batting alongside Gayle, the player he had long admired.
