Barbados-born all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite is remembered above all for one over. In the final of the ICC World T20 2016 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, he struck Ben Stokes for four sixes in succession, a burst that carried West Indies past England and to the title. His 34 from 10 balls that night made him a household name, and a few months afterwards, with just eight T20 Internationals played, he was handed the West Indies T20I captaincy. He took over from Darren Sammy, who was not picked for a two-match series against India in Florida.

His rise began in his first first-class season in 2011. On debut against Trinidad and Tobago he claimed 7/90 in the second innings, and he went on to collect 26 wickets across eight first-class matches that year. That earned him a spot on the national tour of Bangladesh, where he made his T20I debut in Dhaka in October 2011 and played his first ODI a week later against the same side. Neither game brought much success, and roughly three years passed before he was recalled.
A solid 2014-15 domestic campaign put him in the squad for the January 2015 tour of South Africa, though he missed selection for the World Cup that followed. He was later included in the Test and ODI squads for the Sri Lanka tour of October and November 2015. His Test debut came against Australia in Melbourne, where he went wicketless conceding 109 runs but battled to 59 batting at No.8. In the rain-affected, drawn Test at Sydney he added a brisker 69 from 71 balls. His form is described as having slipped since his Kolkata heroics.
The World T20 final also made him a sought-after figure in the Indian Premier League, where he has turned out for three franchises across four seasons. The Delhi Daredevils signed him for 4.2 crore rupees, fourteen times his 30 lakh base price, but he struggled to justify the outlay over two difficult seasons. A move to Hyderabad followed; arriving late in the 2018 tournament, he scored quickly and bowled effectively as the side reached the final. Kolkata Knight Riders then secured him with a 5 crore bid, making him their third West Indian signing after Sunil Narine and Andre Russell.
