Kerwin Mungroo is a fast bowler whose route into professional cricket was far from straightforward. He grew up in a household without much money, and those circumstances could easily have cut short his ambition of playing the game seriously. He kept at it anyway, and that determination eventually paid off, even if the reward took some time to arrive.
On the field, Mungroo is an unusual cricketer in that he openly prefers bowling and has little affection for batting. He is tall and powerfully built, and his main weapon is the ability to move the new red ball through the air early in an innings. His first steps at amateur level came with KZN Inland.
He also showed he could handle the shortest format. His displays at the 2017 African T20 Cup caught attention and helped open the door to franchise cricket. In the early part of 2018 he went on a trip to Sri Lanka as a member of a South African emerging squad, and late that same year Paarl Rocks signed him for the first season of the Mzansi league, known as MSL.
Mungroo featured in only four games during that opening MSL campaign, but one of them stood out. With Paarl Rocks needing a victory against Jozi Stars, he claimed three wickets, and among his victims was the celebrated Chris Gayle, a dismissal that underlined what he could offer at that level.
