His rise came through the longer format first. Across 7 first-class matches in the 2012/13 season he took 35 wickets, form that put him firmly in the frame for South Africa A. Against India A in Pretoria in 2013 he returned 11 wickets in the match and steered his side to victory, a display that set his career moving quickly.

The shortest format then brought him wider attention. Turning out for Cape Cobras in the 2013/14 Ram Slam T20 competition, he finished on top of the wicket-taking list, collecting 28 scalps from 11 games at an average of 10.28. That haul led to an Indian Premier League deal, with Kings XI Punjab paying Rs 1.8 crore to secure him.

Recognition at international level followed in 2014, when South Africa called him up for a Twenty20 International series against Australia. He was also named in the squad for the World T20 held in Bangladesh that year. Left out of the opening two fixtures, he came into the team as the replacement for Morne Morkel and went on to claim 4 wickets over 3 appearances. He kept his runs conceded tight and made clever use of his changes of pace and delivery.
