Shamim Hossain

He came through the Bangladesh side that lifted the U19 World Cup in 2020, a group that has supplied a number of players to the senior team. His own step up came in 2021, when he was handed a T20I debut against Zimbabwe. Both games in that series went right to the final overs, and Shamim drew attention with short, striking innings in the finishing role.

The promise of that start faded quickly. Against Australia in the series that followed, he could not get past single figures, and his T20 World Cup later in 2021 also went poorly. Bangladesh dropped him in short order, and he did not play a single international match during 2022.

His route back ran through the BPL, where solid displays earned a recall in 2023. He used it well, posting his first international half-century against Ireland, and within a few months he was given an ODI debut against Afghanistan. Even so, the selectors were not won over and kept him out of the squad for close to a year, a spell that meant he was absent from the 2024 T20 World Cup. A return for the T20I series in West Indies brought a couple of innings that made a real difference.

The following BPL, a couple of months later, was the most productive of his career to that point. He collected 352 runs while striking at 160, in a tournament where Chittagong Kings went all the way to the final.
