Cameron Gannon is a fast bowler who stands around 2 meters tall, a frame that lets him extract steep bounce from the pitch. He had a strong interest in cricket from a young age, and pace bowling was a natural path for someone of his build.
He arrived in the Sheffield Shield in the 2012/13 season at the age of 22 and made a quick impression by removing top-order batsmen. In one Shield match against New South Wales he dismissed Michael Clarke, then captain of Australia, in both innings. He finished that first season with 31 wickets at an average of 23.51. His progress was interrupted in 2013 when his bowling action was ruled illegal and he was banned.
Gannon rebuilt his action, and the ban was lifted in time for the 2013/14 domestic season. After his return the Brisbane Heat signed him for the Big Bash League, and he repaid them with 18 wickets from 8 matches. Opposing sides reportedly tried to see off his overs and attack other bowlers instead, wary of his bounce and the seam movement he could find on pitches offering a little assistance.
His Big Bash career later took him to the Stars and the Renegades before he went back to the Heat in 2017/18, and he turned out for the Perth Scorchers in 2023/24.
Through his mother Gannon holds an American passport, and he chose to play for the United States. His T20 International debut came against Bermuda at the 2018-19 ICC T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier, while he kept playing domestic cricket in Australia for Western Australia.
