Dane Piedt is a South African cricketer who bowls right-arm off-spin. His path to the national side was built on domestic success with Cape Cobras, for whom he claimed 45 wickets during the 2013-14 season, a return that earned him attention from the selectors.
That form brought a place in the South African squad that toured Sri Lanka in July 2014, although he did not get a game on that trip. His opportunity came the following month, when he was given a Test debut against Zimbabwe in a one-off match at Harare.
Piedt struck straight away. With the very first delivery of his Test career he trapped the Zimbabwe batsman Vermeulen leg before wicket. He went on to collect 8 wickets across the match, the best figures ever recorded by a South African spinner on debut, and his bowling was central to a comfortable 9-wicket victory for his side. Captain Hashim Amla was full of praise afterwards, saying Piedt had bowled exceptionally well and suggesting he could become a star for the team in the future.
Beyond the longest format, Piedt's capacity to extract sharp turn and his range of variations have led to him being regarded as a promising prospect for one-day international cricket too.
