Harpreet Brar comes from Moga in Punjab, and his interest in cricket was sparked by watching Yuvraj Singh hit Stuart Broad for six sixes in a single over. Wanting to build a career in the game was one thing; paying for it was another, as he lacked the money to pursue the sport seriously. Help arrived from Gurkeerat Singh Maan, a former India player, who passed on his own bat and some of his used kit to the young cricketer.
Brar made a habit of scoring and taking wickets heavily in age group competitions, yet a professional opening was slow to come. He went through four separate trials with the Punjab IPL franchise. At one point he had given up on waiting and was preparing to emigrate to Canada, with his luggage already packed, before his circumstances changed.
The breakthrough came in 2019, when Punjab Kings selected him for the IPL. Opportunities were scarce at first. Across his first two seasons he appeared in only three matches, failing to take a wicket and offering little with the bat.
His fortunes turned in a match against RCB, in which he was named man of the match. In that game he removed Virat Kohli, AB De Villiers and Glenn Maxwell, becoming the first bowler to claim all three of them in one fixture. From that point on he has served Punjab Kings as a useful all-rounder, contributing whenever the team has turned to him.
