Shubman Gill comes from Fazilka in Punjab. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, spotted his gift early and relocated the family to Mohali, renting a home close to the PCA Stadium so the boy could be near proper cricket facilities. The move paid off quickly. In a 2014 Punjab Inter-District U16 event Gill made 351 and shared an opening partnership of 587 with Nirmal Singh, and on his U16 debut for Punjab at the 2016 Vijay Merchant Trophy he posted a double century. The BCCI named him its Best Junior Cricketer in both 2013-14 and 2014-15.
At youth international level he was prolific. He made 351 runs from 4 innings as India beat England 3-1 at home in Youth ODIs, then collected 278 from 4 innings during a 5-0 sweep in England. The breakthrough came at the 2018 ICC U19 World Cup in New Zealand, where, batting at No. 3, he totalled 418 runs at 104.50, helped India to their fourth title and was named Player of the Tournament. Kolkata Knight Riders then bought him for INR 1.8 crore. On the domestic side, he debuted in List A cricket in the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy and in first-class cricket in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy, scoring a fifty against Bengal and a hundred against Services in his next match.
Gill earned his first India cap in ODIs in New Zealand in 2019. Opening in Australia, he struck a crucial 91 in the Gabba Test as a weakened India took the series 2-1. His maiden ODI century arrived against Zimbabwe in August 2022, and a first Test hundred followed that year in Bangladesh. In January 2023 he debuted in T20Is and hit a century in the same month, becoming the fifth Indian with hundreds in all three formats. He topped the 2023 IPL run charts with 890, including 3 centuries, and scored 354 runs with four fifties at that year's World Cup.
The following period was uneven. He made two hundreds and two fifties in home Tests against England in 2024 but averaged 38.73 in that IPL, went to the T20 World Cup only as a reserve, and soon after led India in Zimbabwe. A hard Border-Gavaskar series saw him miss the opening Test injured, lose his place for the fourth, and score 20 and 13 on his return at Sydney.
He rebounded in 2025 with 87, 60 and 112 against England, entering the Champions Trophy ranked the No.1 ODI batter. An unbeaten 101 opened his campaign and he ended with 188 runs, third for India. As captain of Gujarat Titans he made 650 IPL runs, then led India's Test side against England and scored 754 runs across five matches.
