He came through Sri Lanka's Under-19 system, where he was a contemporary of Kusal Mendis. Mendis has since made greater progress at international level, while Samarawickrama's position with the senior team has been far less settled.
Despite his evident ability, he has not nailed down a permanent spot in the national team and has moved in and out of the side, even during a period when Sri Lanka struggled for batting. Some commentators have pointed to his temperament as the issue holding him back.
In the shorter formats he likes to bat at the top of the order, where he can make the most of the fielding restrictions. His heavy run-scoring in domestic cricket keeps him in the selectors' thinking, and the view of those who rate him is that, if he realises his considerable potential, he has the makings of a star across all formats.
