At the 2012 Under-19 World Cup he was a member of the side that made it through to the semi-finals. When the 2014 tournament came around, he was given the captaincy, leading the team at that event.
Also in 2014, O'Donnell made 80 while playing for a New Zealand XI in a match against India's touring side, an innings that pointed to his potential at a higher level. His first-class output since has been more modest: across 35 first-class matches he has scored two centuries, a return that has fallen short of the high hopes once held for him.
Despite this, Auckland have kept their faith in him. He was handed a new one-year deal, keeping him with the team for the 2018-19 domestic season.
