Uttar PradeshBowler
Shivam Mavi is a fast bowler who belonged to the India side that won the 2018 ICC U19 World Cup. He made people sit up from India's very first match of that tournament, repeatedly topping 140 kph and rushing an Australian batting line-up raised on quick, bouncy surfaces. His pace that day was a sign of how much Indian fast bowling has developed.
Mavi did not begin as a bowler. Like plenty of young cricketers in India, he first concentrated on batting. That changed at the Wanderers Cricket Club in Noida, where his coach, Phoolchand, watched him send the ball down in the nets and encouraged him to focus on pace bowling. Helped by a smooth, rhythmic approach to the crease, Mavi was soon competing against players above his own level.
His path was not entirely smooth. Even after impressing at U16 level, he was unexpectedly left out of the Delhi U16 squad, and that setback prompted him to leave Delhi and play for Uttar Pradesh instead. While turning out for his new side he hurt his knee, an injury that kept him out of action for three months. The layoff also reshaped his bowling, as he moved away from relying on outswing and began working mainly with inswing.
Standing 5' 9", Mavi lacks the towering build often linked with fast bowlers, but he brings an aggressive attitude to the role. He models that approach on his hero, Dale Steyn, another quick bowler who is not especially tall. At the 2018 IPL auction, Kolkata Knight Riders signed Mavi for INR 3 crore.
