He was introduced to one-day international cricket in a match against the Netherlands, played as part of the Intercontinental Cup One-Day competition. He made an immediate impression, finishing that debut match with figures of 4 for 27.
His first appearance in first-class cricket came in September 2011, against Namibia. He played his second first-class match against the UAE during the 2012 Intercontinental Cup.
The 2014 World Cup Qualifiers were an important event for both Sharif and Scotland. He collected 14 wickets across the tournament and was a key contributor to the success his side enjoyed there. Those performances helped him earn a spot in the 15-man squad selected for the 2015 World Cup.
